Farmers in Gombe State are gearing up for early planting in anticipation of the rains expected to begin this May, following predictions by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet).
The 2025 Seasonal Climate Prediction, released in February, forecasts that the rainy season in Gombe will start on May 27 in Shongom and as late as June 17 in Nafada. The season is expected to end on October 14 in Nafada and November 3 in Yamaltu/Deba.
NiMet estimates annual rainfall in the state to be below normal, ranging between 606mm and 789mm. Nafada is expected to receive the least rainfall, while Shongom may record the highest. Rainfall duration will also vary, with 107 days expected in Nafada and 140 days in Yamaltu/Deba.
Lydia Simon Bawa, the Climate Change Desk Officer, advised farmers to adhere strictly to the predicted onset dates to avoid crop failure. She urged them to adopt early-maturing and drought-resistant crop varieties, especially in areas likely to experience a shorter growing season.
Bawa also warned of a potential 21-day dry spell across Nafada, Yamaltu/Deba, Dukku, and Funakaye between June and August, and predicted cooler night temperatures in May.
In addition to rainfall patterns, NiMet also forecasted the likelihood of strong windstorms and sandstorms, particularly in northern states including Gombe. Farmers and residents were urged to clear drainages regularly, avoid open defecation, refrain from tree felling, and practice water harvesting to manage dry spells.
“Farmers should not plant before the establishment of rains,” Bawa emphasized. “Taking preventive measures now can help reduce the risk of crop loss, flooding, and damage during the season.”
