Nigeria’s agricultural sector, a cornerstone of its economy and sustenance for millions, is increasingly threatened by the adverse effects of climate change. Erratic weather patterns, rising temperatures, and extreme events like floods and droughts have disrupted traditional farming practices, leading to decreased crop yields and livestock productivity. This report delves into the multifaceted impacts of climate change on Nigeria’s agriculture and explores adaptive strategies to enhance resilience and ensure food security.

Impact on Crop Production

Climate change has significantly affected crop production in Nigeria. Studies indicate that variations in rainfall and temperature have led to reduced yields in staple crops such as maize, rice, and cassava. For instance, research highlights that decreased rainfall and increased temperatures have adversely impacted food crop production in Lagos State.

Moreover, extreme weather events have exacerbated the situation. In 2022, Nigeria experienced devastating floods that affected 29 of its 36 states, destroying over 1.5 million hectares of cropland and impacting more than nine million people . Such events not only reduce immediate agricultural output but also have long-term effects on soil fertility and farming viability.

Impact on Livestock Production

Livestock farming, another vital component of Nigeria’s agriculture, is equally vulnerable. Rising temperatures and changing precipitation patterns have led to heat stress, reduced water availability, and increased disease prevalence among animals. A study examining the impact of climate change on livestock production in Nigeria found that these climatic anomalies negatively affect livestock health and productivity.

Furthermore, the scarcity of pasture due to prolonged droughts has forced pastoralists to migrate, often leading to conflicts over grazing lands. The challenges faced by cattle herders in adapting to climate variability underscore the need for comprehensive strategies to support livestock farmers .

Adaptive Strategies and Policy Recommendations

Early Warning Systems: Developing and disseminating accurate weather forecasts can help farmers make informed decisions. Enhanced meteorological services are crucial for anticipating and mitigating the impacts of extreme weather events.

Infrastructure Development: Investing in infrastructure, such as flood control systems and storage facilities, can reduce post-harvest losses and protect farmlands from climatic shocks.

Policy and Institutional Support: Strengthening policies that promote sustainable land use and providing financial incentives for adopting adaptive practices are essential. The Nigerian government’s declaration of a food security emergency in 2023 highlights the urgency of such interventions.

Research and Extension Services: Enhancing research on climate-resilient crops and livestock, coupled with effective extension services, can facilitate the dissemination of best practices among farmers.Climate change poses a significant threat to Nigeria’s agricultural sector, affecting both crop and livestock production. However, with proactive measures encompassing technological innovation, infrastructure development, and supportive policies, it is possible to mitigate these impacts. Building resilience in agriculture is not only vital for food security but also for the overall economic stability and well-being of Nigeria’s population.
