Across Nigeria, the impact of climate change is becoming increasingly visible, not through headlines alone but in the changing patterns of farming. From prolonged droughts in the North to devastating floods in the South, environmental shifts are altering where and how food is produced. For millions of Nigerians who depend on agriculture for survival, these changes are reshaping livelihoods and threatening national food security.
Agriculture remains one of Nigeria’s most important economic sectors, employing more than 35 per cent of the country’s labour force, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). However, the sector is largely dependent on rainfall, making it vulnerable to extreme weather conditions. As climate variability intensifies, the traditional farming calendar is becoming unreliable, leaving farmers struggling to adapt.

Northern Nigeria: Battling Drought and Desertification
In northern Nigeria, rising temperatures and declining rainfall are making farming increasingly difficult. States such as Borno, Yobe, Katsina, Sokoto, and Zamfara face advancing desertification and shrinking water sources. The Lake Chad Basin, once a lifeline for farmers and fishermen, has lost about 90 per cent of its size since the 1960s, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the Lake Chad Basin Commission.
Erratic rainfall has led to repeated crop failures, forcing farmers to switch from water-intensive crops like rice and maize to drought-resistant varieties such as millet and sorghum. While this adaptation offers temporary relief, it also reduces overall productivity and income.
The Federal Ministry of Environment estimates that desertification affects about 43 per cent of Nigeria’s landmass, threatening the livelihoods of over 40 million people. As arable land diminishes, competition for resources intensifies, contributing to rural poverty, migration, and insecurity.
The World Bank has also warned that climate change could reduce crop yields across sub-Saharan Africa by up to 20 per cent by 2050 if urgent measures are not taken. For Nigeria, this projection presents a serious challenge, particularly in the northern region where agriculture is predominantly rain-fed.
Southern Nigeria: Flooding and Farmland Losses
While the North grapples with drought, southern Nigeria faces a different crisis—recurrent flooding. Heavy rainfall, poor drainage systems, and rising river levels have combined to devastate farmlands and rural communities.
The 2022 floods, described by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) as the worst in a decade, affected over 30 states, displaced more than 1.4 million people, and destroyed hundreds of thousands of hectares of farmland. The disaster disrupted food supply chains and contributed to rising food prices nationwide.
Similarly, the Food and Agriculture Organization reported that floods submerged vast agricultural areas, damaging crops such as rice, cassava, and maize. States along the River Niger and River Benue corridors—including Kogi, Benue, Anambra, Bayelsa and Delta—have remained highly vulnerable.
The consequences extend beyond immediate losses. Repeated flooding discourages investment in agriculture and forces farmers to abandon their lands, leading to declining productivity and increased dependence on food imports.
Farmers Forced to Migrate or Switch Crops
As climate pressures intensify, many Nigerian farmers are left with difficult choices. Some are migrating in search of fertile land, while others are altering their production methods to survive.
In the North, prolonged drought has driven farmers southward, intensifying competition for land and natural resources. Analysts have linked these movements to recurring farmer-herder conflicts in parts of the Middle Belt. The International Crisis Group notes that environmental degradation is a key factor fueling such tensions.
Meanwhile, farmers in flood-prone regions are adopting early-maturing and water-tolerant crop varieties. Others are diversifying into aquaculture and agro-processing to reduce risks. However, limited access to financing, modern technology, and climate-resilient inputs continues to hinder adaptation.
According to the African Development Bank, smallholder farmers—who account for about 80 per cent of Nigeria’s agricultural production—are the most affected by climate shocks. Without adequate support, their vulnerability threatens the stability of the country’s food system.
Implications for Food Supply in the Next Decade
The long-term implications of these developments are profound. Nigeria is already experiencing food inflation, driven partly by disruptions in agricultural production. Data from the National Bureau of Statistics shows that food prices have remained a major contributor to the country’s inflation rate in recent years.
If current trends persist, food shortages may worsen over the next five to ten years. Declining yields in drought-prone areas and repeated flooding in key food-producing states could reduce national output of staples such as rice, maize, and cassava.
The World Food Programme has warned that millions of Nigerians face food insecurity due to a combination of climate shocks, economic challenges, and insecurity. With Nigeria’s population projected to exceed 250 million by 2030, ensuring sustainable food production will become even more critical.
Climate change could also alter regional crop patterns. Areas once suitable for certain crops may become unproductive, forcing farmers to relocate or adopt new agricultural practices. This shift has the potential to disrupt supply chains and increase the country’s reliance on imports.
The Role of AgriTech and Policy Interventions
Addressing these challenges requires strategic investments and policy reforms. Climate-smart agriculture, irrigation systems, improved seedlings, and digital technologies are increasingly viewed as viable solutions.
AgriTech innovations such as satellite weather forecasting, precision farming, and mobile-based advisory services are helping farmers adapt to changing conditions. Initiatives supported by organisations like the World Bank, the African Development Bank, and the International Fund for Agricultural Development aim to strengthen resilience and boost productivity.

Government interventions, including the National Agricultural Technology and Innovation Policy and the Nigeria Climate Change Act of 2021, also seek to address environmental challenges. However, effective implementation remains essential to achieving meaningful results.
Defining Moment for Nigeria’s Agricultural Future
Climate change is no longer a distant concern—it is reshaping Nigeria’s agricultural landscape in real time. The contrast between drought-stricken northern fields and flood-ravaged southern farmlands tells a story of a nation grappling with environmental transformation.
For farmers, the challenge is immediate and personal. For policymakers, it demands urgent action. For the country as a whole, it raises critical questions about food security, economic stability, and sustainable development.
If decisive steps are taken, Nigeria can adapt and build a resilient agricultural system capable of feeding its growing population. If not, the quiet changes unfolding across its farmlands may define the nation’s food future for generations to come.
