A former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has called for increased investment in agriculture as a strategy to strengthen food security in Nigeria.
Amaechi made the call on Tuesday during a visit to a farm settlement in Maraba Gaate, Nasarawa State, where he emphasised the need to modernise the country’s agricultural sector.
He urged stakeholders to move away from traditional farming methods and adopt mechanised and technology-driven practices to improve productivity and efficiency.
According to him, prioritising agriculture would not only boost food production but also reduce dependence on imports and create employment opportunities.
“The best way to fight insecurity in the country is to invest in agriculture,” he said.
Amaechi reiterated the importance of transitioning from subsistence farming to large-scale, modern agricultural systems capable of supporting economic growth and addressing food shortages.
He expressed satisfaction with the level of development at the farm visited and called for sustained commitment to similar initiatives across the country.
The former minister also pledged to invest in agriculture, noting that he intends to replicate agricultural models similar to those implemented at the Songhai farms during his tenure as governor of Rivers State.
