OPay Digital Services has dismissed as false and misleading a viral social media publication claiming that the fintech company would suspend its operations from September 1, 2026, urging customers to withdraw or transfer their funds.
The publication, which circulated widely across social media platforms on Sunday, purportedly warned OPay users that the company would embark on a prolonged break beginning September 1. OPay, however, said the claim was fabricated and assured customers that its services remain fully operational.
In an official response shared through its verified social media platforms, the company described the publication as false and urged members of the public to carefully verify information before sharing it. “OPay is not going on break by September. We’re here, and we’re going nowhere!” the company stated.
OPay also pointed to inconsistencies in the viral publication and advised customers to rely on its verified communication channels for authentic information.
“True OPay users know how to identify our official communications. Take a closer look at the viral post and you’ll spot the red flags. Always verify before you share.
Filter the noise! Follow our official pages for authentic OPay updates,” the company said.
Also reacting to the development, OPay’s Vice-President, Public and Government Affairs, Dr. Maxwell Loko, described the publication as “false, malicious and misleading”, warning customers against taking any action based on the information. “This post is false, malicious and misleading.
OPay is not shutting down, and customers should not be misled into withdrawing their funds based on fabricated information,” Loko said.
Loko urged the public to disregard the publication and depend exclusively on OPay’s verified platforms for official announcements.
He also warned that deliberate attempts to circulate false information capable of causing panic or undermining confidence in a financial institution could have legal consequences.
“The deliberate spread of false information designed to cause panic or undermine confidence in a financial institution is a serious matter and may have legal consequences,” he said.
OPay advised customers to exercise caution when receiving financial or operational announcements online and to verify such information through the company’s authenticated communication channels before taking any action.
The company reaffirmed that its services remain available and that there is no plan to shut down or suspend operations from September 1, 2026.
