Three people have died and four others sustained injuries after a two-storey building collapsed in Owode-Ede, Ede North Local Government Area of Osun State.
The collapse reportedly occurred at about 11pm on Friday, October 30, trapping seven artisans who were working at the site. The victims were said to be apprentice tilers who had travelled from Ejigbo to work on the building, according to The Point and a separate report by HeraldSun.
Workers reportedly trapped at site
Reports indicate that the workers had continued their duties late into the night and decided to sleep at the construction site, intending to resume work the following morning. The building reportedly collapsed while they were there.
Three of the seven workers were confirmed dead, while the remaining four were rescued with injuries. Emergency responders, including personnel of the Federal Fire Service, were reported to have taken part in rescue activities at the scene.
HeraldSun reported allegations from sources that the structure had been in poor condition before the collapse and that engineering supervision during construction may have been lacking. The report also said the building was a shopping complex, with shops on its upper floors and stores at basement level. These claims have not been independently confirmed.
