The National Association of Nigeria Student (NANS) has condemned the increment of school fees at Unilag and planned increment across tertiary institutions in the country.

This was made known in a statement released by the Association PRO, Giwa Yisa Temitope on July 22.

The statement reads in part, “It is ridiculous and embarrassing that the government will introduce a fee increment without thinking of rescuing over 133 million Nigerian people from multidimensional poverty.

“Increment in fees across tertiary institutions will only complicate the poverty situation of the country and also increase the number of out of school children.”

Moreso, the association opposed the introduction of the student loans by the federal government to lure Nigerians into accepting increments in fees.

Giwa said, “The statement loan introduced by the federal government is nothing but a sham and a bait to lure Nigerian people into accepting increment in fees payable.

“Beyond the fact that the terms of the loan are ridiculous, history has taught that not every applicant will be considered.

“And even if all of them were to be considered, it still does not justify an increase in an economy that tops the unemployment index. Rather than give loans, the government must provide for grants and scholarships for Students.”

The Association however added that the development should be suspended and reversed with immediate effect.

“We call on Nigerians to brace up and be prepared for all-round protest as was done during the prolonged ASUU strike until the Federal Government reverses it’s policy.” He added.
