David Olatunji and Daniel Akinte, reporters at The Harbinger, alongside former reporter Miracle Akubuo, have been selected for the 2025 Campus Journalism Fellowship organized by the Africa Foundation for Young Media Professionals (AFYMP).
The trio was chosen among 20 fellows selected from over 200 applications received across Nigeria after a rigorous screening process.
According to a memo signed by the programme’s Project Manager, Oladotun Busola, 10 of the fellows will participate in person, while the remaining 10 will join virtually.
The fellowship is designed to build the capacity of young journalists in ethical reporting, disability and inclusion, gender-sensitive journalism, data-driven storytelling, fact-checking, and investigative reporting.
Reacting to his selection, David Olatunji, a student of University of Ibadan, Abeokuta affiliate campus described the opportunity as a recognition of his growth in journalism and expressed gratitude to his mentors.
“I feel honoured to be selected as a fellow of the AFYMP Campus Journalism programme. It’s one of the most competitive journalism development opportunities in Nigeria. I appreciate my mentors who have constantly supported me,” he said.
“This fellowship will help me sharpen my skills and make a smooth transition into mainstream media.”
Miracle Akubuo, a student of Offa Polytechnic also expressed excitement over her selection.
“I didn’t expect to be chosen, but I’m thankful. I look forward to learning and unlearning through the programme,” she said.
Daniel Akinte, a student of Adekunle Ajasin University Akungba Akoko, Ondo state described the selection as a milestone in his journalism journey.
“This is a big step forward in my development as a journalist. I believe this programme will equip me to tell more impactful stories.”
AFYMP is a pan-African media development organization committed to nurturing ethical, inclusive, and impact-driven journalists. The foundation supports press freedom and empowers storytellers through programmes focused on inclusive reporting, gender and disability journalism, and investigative storytelling.
The Campus Journalism Fellowship is one of its flagship initiatives, targeting student journalists across Nigeria and Africa. Fellows undergo practical training, mentorship, and real-world reporting exposure, supported by experienced journalists and media professionals.
The 2025 cohort is expected to participate in a series of intensive trainings — both virtual and in-person — aimed at equipping them with essential journalism skills.
