The Accord Party’s candidate for Osun Central Senatorial District, Aare Ganiyu Olaoluwa Asejere, has called for urgent efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s democratic institutions and restore public confidence in governance, warning that rising insecurity, economic hardship and disregard for the rule of law are threatening the country’s democratic stability.
Asejere made the call in a statement issued to journalists on Thursday to commemorate the 2026 Democracy Day celebration, titled “The Time Has Come to Rescue Nigeria’s Democracy from Its Fragile State.”
While congratulating Nigerians, particularly the people of Osun Central Senatorial District, on the occasion, he said Nigeria’s uninterrupted democratic journey over the past 27 years remained a significant achievement despite the numerous socio-economic and political challenges confronting the country.
According to him, growing insecurity, inflation, unemployment, banditry, kidnapping and other social vices continue to undermine the nation’s democratic progress and national development.
He stressed that addressing these challenges requires renewed national commitment, responsible leadership and the strengthening of democratic institutions.
Asejere said institutions of government and public office holders must be allowed to perform their constitutional responsibilities without interference, political bias or undue influence.
“As we celebrate Democracy Day, we must honour the sacrifices of our democratic heroes who fought tirelessly, and in some cases paid the ultimate price, for the restoration and sustenance of democratic governance in Nigeria,” he said.
He added that their sacrifices should inspire both leaders and citizens to protect and consolidate the gains of democracy for future generations.
Asejere also expressed sympathy with residents of Ora in Ifedayo Local Government Area of Osun State, particularly families of victims reportedly abducted by kidnappers during an attack on the community a few days ago.
He called on security agencies to intensify efforts towards securing the immediate and safe release of the abductees while improving security across vulnerable communities.
Asejere further expressed concern over what he described as the gradual erosion of democratic values, citing selective enforcement of court judgments, conflicting judicial pronouncements, alleged misinterpretation of court decisions and disregard for the rule of law as major threats to Nigeria’s democracy.
Asejere maintained that Nigeria possesses abundant human and natural resources capable of transforming the nation’s fortunes if properly managed.
He expressed optimism that the country could overcome its current challenges through sincere leadership, inclusive national dialogue and effective governance.
According to him, restoring hope, strengthening national unity, promoting peace and ensuring justice and accountability remain critical to preserving Nigeria’s democracy and achieving sustainable development.
He urged Nigerians to remain committed to democratic ideals, peaceful coexistence and active participation in governance, saying democracy can only flourish where citizens and leaders uphold justice, equity, accountability and the rule of law.
Asejere wished Nigerians, especially residents of Osun Central Senatorial District, a peaceful and reflective Democracy Day celebration.
