The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Osun State has assured media practitioners of full cooperation ahead of the August 15 governorship election in the state.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in the state, Mrs Oluwatoyin Babalola, also pledged that the election would be credible, free, fair, inclusive and transparent.
Babalola gave the assurance on Monday during a courtesy visit by members of the Osun Online Publishers Association (OOPA) to the INEC state office in Osogbo.
Speaking during the meeting, the REC described the media as a critical stakeholder in the electoral process and the society at large, stressing the role of journalists in combating misinformation and disinformation.
“If there is no media, the society cannot be informed. When it comes to election matters, there is misinformation and disinformation, and the media is needed to correct these anomalies,” she said.
She noted that the commission would continue to work closely with the media to ensure adequate voter education and dissemination of accurate information regarding electoral activities.
According to her, the media also plays a major role in promoting peaceful coexistence and tolerance within the society.
Babalola further warned against tampering with election results, noting that the offence attracts jail terms without the option of fine.
She urged journalists and media organisations intending to cover the election to register for accreditation to avoid restrictions on election day.
The REC also disclosed that security agencies had assured the commission of adequate support to safeguard lives and property before, during and after the election.
Earlier, the Chairman of OOPA, Abioye Lawrence, welcomed Babalola to the state and urged her to ensure a transparent and credible electoral process while maintaining a cordial relationship with media practitioners.
