Award-winning Nigerian singer Yemi Alade has emphasized that music, for her, is a passion rather than a career.
In the latest episode of the Tea With Tay podcast, she revealed, “It [music] was always a passion and I was hoping to see where it would take me.”
Alade expressed that if she had to choose a career years ago, music wouldn’t have been her first choice, stating, “I loved the idea of it [music] but I did not want it to be a career.
I did not see it as a career. It was a big hobby I was very invested in. But not a career.”
Reflecting on the past, she added, “If you had asked me 11/12 years ago if I wanted to be a musician, I would not pick that as a career choice. I still wouldn’t do it.
As much as I was into a lot of music related stuff, I just believed that this hobby I would do something with it but I’m going to continue with my academics like my parents want me to.
I’m certain I’m going to get a job if music doesn’t work out.”
However, her perspective changed after winning the Peak Talent Show in 2009, leading her to sign with Effyzzie Music Group and achieve success with her hit single ‘Johnny’ in 2014.
She explained, “It [music] changed for me after I won the Peak Talent Show. That was in 2009. I was in school, I was at 200 level, 19 years old.
After I won, it was not a big deal for me. I didn’t see it as, ‘Oh wow, I’ve won the talent show, so now I’m a star.’ No, I didn’t.” Despite her initial reservations about a music career, Alade’s journey in the industry took a turn, and she has since become a prominent figure with notable achievements.
