The National Civil Society Coalition in Defence of Democracy has warned a retired Chief of Army Staff, against allegedly attempting to influence the Nigerian military ahead of the Osun State governorship election.
In a statement jointly signed by Comrade Jude Osekede and Olusegun Fasakin, the coalition alleged that the retired general was putting pressure on military authorities in a bid to influence the conduct of the Nigerian Army, Air Force and Navy in favour of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The coalition claimed it had received information that the retired general was allegedly seeking to have military personnel deployed for the election “look the other way” while suspected APC thugs disrupt voting in areas considered strongholds of the Accord Party.
It further alleged that the retired general was lobbying military authorities to alter the operational instructions of soldiers deployed to Osun, who are expected to prevent violence and protect voters during Saturday’s election.
The group said such an alleged move could undermine the reputation and professionalism of the Nigerian military, warning serving officers against allowing retired officers to influence them into unlawful or anti-democratic activities.
The coalition also alleged that APC-linked thugs had been responsible for attacks that left more than 15 Osun residents dead and over 50 others receiving treatment for gunshot injuries. It, however, did not provide details or independent evidence to substantiate the claims.
The group called on the military to remain neutral and ensure strict maintenance of law and order during the election.
“What the nation wants and what constitutional democracy prescribes is free and fair election and this is what all security agencies should abide with,” the coalition said.
