The Accord Party candidate for Osun Central Senatorial District, Aare Ganiyu Olaoluwa Asejere, has condemned the recent wave of alleged politically motivated attacks across parts of Osun State, describing the killings and injuries recorded in communities including Owode-Ede, Ile-Ife and Osogbo as a grave threat to democracy and the sanctity of human life.
In a press statement issued on Tuesday, Asejere expressed concern over what he described as coordinated attacks on innocent citizens over the past two weeks, saying the incidents were “outrageous and heartbreaking.
According to him, the latest violence, which reportedly claimed lives and left several others injured, constituted a violation of citizens’ constitutional rights to freedom of association and undermined Nigeria’s democratic system.
He recalled that about two weeks ago, the Chairman of the Accord Party in Osogbo Local Government Area, popularly known as Baba Isila, was allegedly shot and hospitalized.
Asejere further alleged that armed thugs loyal to the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) carried out the attack in Owode-Ede, resulting in deaths and injuries. The allegation has not been independently verified.
“I am worried and devastated. There appears to be no value for human life anymore, and it is very unfortunate that there is no respect for the sanctity of human lives,” he said.
Asejere sympathised with the families of those who lost their loved ones and wished those receiving treatment a speedy recovery.
He called on the Inspector-General of Police to launch a thorough investigation into the incidents and ensure that those responsible were brought to justice, warning that any attempt to shield the perpetrators could fuel further unrest.
Asejere also commended Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, for his prompt visit to victims receiving treatment at the UNIOSUN Teaching Hospital, describing the governor’s gesture as timely and compassionate.
He urged residents of the state to remain peaceful, law-abiding and refrain from taking the law into their own hands, expressing confidence that justice would prevail through due process.
