The ancient town of Ogbomoso has welcomed a new monarch, ending a 21-month vacancy in the throne since the passing of the late Oba Jimoh Oladunni Oyewunmi, who held the longest reign in the town’s history.
On September 2, 2023, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State officially appointed Prince Afolabi Ghandi Olaoye as the new Soun-elect of Ogbomoso Land, following a rigorous and lawful selection process, as stated by Commissioner Olusegun Olayiwola.
Prince Afolabi Ghandi Olaoye, also known as Pastor G, hails from the esteemed Olaoye royal lineage within Ogbomoso.
He brings a unique blend of experiences, having initially pursued a career as an entrepreneur and motivational speaker before transitioning to pastoral duties at the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Jesus House in Washington DC, United States, in 1992.
His educational journey began with English Language studies in Nigeria, followed by postgraduate studies in Industrial and Labour Relations abroad.
He went on to pastor RCCG churches in Nigeria and Germany, showcasing his commitment to both spirituality and leadership.
Pastor G’s commitment to service extends to his family, as he is married to Princess Olufunke Olaoye and is the proud father of four children: Prince Adetayo, Princess Adetutu, Prince Adedamola, and Princess Adedoyin.
Beyond his pastoral and familial roles, he is a devoted philanthropist who has lent his support to numerous humanitarian initiatives in Nigeria and abroad.
His passion for sports, especially football and tennis, adds a dynamic dimension to his interests.
Linguistically versatile, he is fluent in Yoruba, English, and German.
He has founded the Ghandi Foundation International, a non-governmental organization dedicated to fostering peace, unity, and development.
As a member of various professional bodies and associations, including the Nigerian Institute of Management, the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management, the International Labour Organization, and the American Society for Training and Development, he has contributed significantly to the fields of leadership, management, and spirituality through his authored books and publications.
His illustrious journey has been adorned with accolades, including the African Leadership Award, Global Peace Ambassador Award, Distinguished Service Award from RCCG North America, and the Lifetime Achievement Award from Ogbomoso Parapo Worldwide.
Notably, Prince Afolabi Ghandi Olaoye’s path to kingship was not one he actively pursued, in contrast to his father’s attempt in 1940. Initially hesitant, he confided in his spiritual mentor, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, the General Overseer of RCCG, about his reluctance. Pastor Adeboye advised him not to resist his destiny, even though he didn’t initially pray for it.
On January 2, 2022, Pastor G received a revelation from God affirming his purpose as the Soun of Ogbomoso, despite his personal reservations. He accepted this divine calling, seeing it as God’s will for his life.
The people of Ogbomoso eagerly anticipate his reign, hoping for increased prosperity and harmony under his leadership.
While the coronation date remains unannounced, it is expected to be a grand celebration, drawing dignitaries from various backgrounds to witness this historic occasion.
