Africa’s first female Professor of Physics, Professor Deborah Enilo Ajakaiye, has urged young scientists to embrace rigorous research, integrity, and persistence, stating that Physics is the right profession l they will never regret practicing
Speaking during a landmark visit to the Department of Physics, University of Ibadan, her alma mater, Professor Ajakaiye emphasized that solving one research problem with diligence often leads to ten new areas of discovery — a lesson she says guided her groundbreaking career.
“When you solve a research problem properly, it opens ten new areas for you,” she told a gathering of students and faculty, highlighting the boundless opportunities in scientific inquiry.
Held on Thursday, June 26,2025, the event went beyond ceremonial honours and became a platform for knowledge sharing and academic mentorship. Professor Ajakaiye, whose career helped reshape the role of women in African science, reflected on her journey and advised young physicists to stay focused and intentional.
“Commitment, perseverance, and academic integrity are non-negotiable. Your work must speak for you,” she added.
The session, opened by Associate Prof. A.A. Adetoyinbo and marked with prayers by Dr. Oluseyi Ogunsola, featured heartfelt tributes from members of the department who spoke on Professor Ajakaiye’s impact both within and beyond the classroom.
Prof. N.N. Jibrin, a former student, during her undergraduate days at the University of Jos, described her as “a mother figure whose mentorship continues to shape lives.”
Prof. Janet Ademola called the visit a profound moment for young scientists, reminding them that results in science come from consistent input:
“If you want an output, you must make inputs.”
Prof. Rachel Ibhade Obed, Head of Department, expressed her delight at hosting such a pioneering alumna during her tenure.
“I feel honoured and truly happy to have Mama visit during my time as HOD,” she said.
The event concluded with remarks from Prof. Gideon Olayinka Layade, the department’s recently promoted professor on sabbatical appointments, and a closing prayer by Dr. Folashade Aderemi.
Also in attendance were Prof. Oluwole Emmanuel Oyewande, academic staff, students, and other members of the university community. The visit is regarded as not just a homecoming, but a renewed call to excellence for a new generation of Nigerian scientists.
