The Insight Initiative for Community and Social Development (IICSD) has celebrated the second anniversary of its flagship initiative, Osun Open Local Government Project (OsunOpenLG), highlighting the project’s contributions to transparency, accountability, and citizen participation in local governance.
In a statement signed by its Executive Director, Jare Tiamiyu, the organisation said OsunOpenLG was officially launched on May 24, 2024, with support from the Nigeria Youth Futures Fund to strengthen openness and improve governance systems at the grassroots level.
According to the statement, the project has, over the past two years, expanded conversations around transparency and accountability within the local government system by promoting access to information, encouraging citizen participation, and advancing good governance practices.
The organisation described as one of the project’s major achievements the creation of an Artificial Intelligence chatbot dedicated to open governance issues at the local government level in Nigeria.
It noted that the innovation was designed to improve citizens’ access to governance information, strengthen public engagement, and simplify interactions around local government accountability mechanisms.
The statement added that the initiative demonstrates the potential of technology in driving civic participation and governance reforms at the grassroots.
“As we mark this important milestone, this anniversary edition serves not only as an opportunity to celebrate our accomplishments so far, but also to reflect on the journey ahead,” the statement read.
The organisation said it would continue to advance innovative solutions, strengthen partnerships, and drive initiatives aimed at empowering citizens and improving local governance systems.
According to IICSD, the successes recorded through the project reaffirm the belief that sustainable development at the grassroots can only thrive where governance remains transparent, inclusive, participatory, and accountable.
