The Osun State chapter of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has distributed motorcycles to security agencies across the state as part of efforts to strengthen grassroots security and improve rapid response to crime.
Speaking at the distribution ceremony, the ALGON Chairman in Osun State, Hon. Idowu Abiodun, described the initiative as a strategic intervention aimed at enhancing public safety and supporting law enforcement operations, particularly in rural communities.
“It is with great honour and a deep sense of responsibility that I stand before you today at this important occasion marking the distribution of motorcycles to our esteemed security agencies across Osun State,” Abiodun said.
“This event is not just about the handing over of equipment; it is a clear demonstration of our unwavering commitment to the safety, security, and well-being of our people. Security remains the bedrock of any meaningful development.”
Abiodun noted that the intervention underscored the critical role of local governments in addressing security challenges, stressing that their proximity to the grassroots positions them to respond swiftly to emerging threats.
“As the Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Osun State Chapter, I am proud to affirm that local governments remain the closest tier of government to the people. We understand the peculiar security challenges within our communities, and we are determined to support all necessary efforts to address them effectively,” he said.
He attributed the success of the initiative to the growing autonomy of local governments, noting that increased financial and administrative independence had empowered councils to implement people-oriented programmes.
“The success of this initiative is a direct product of the growing autonomy of local governments. When local governments are empowered to manage their resources, set their priorities, and respond swiftly to the needs of their people, the impact is immediate and far-reaching,” Abiodun added.
According to him, the motorcycles will enhance mobility, improve response time, and enable security personnel to access hard-to-reach areas.
“The motorcycles we are distributing today will enhance mobility, improve response time, and enable our security agencies to access difficult terrains, particularly in rural and hard-to-reach areas. This initiative is aimed at strengthening community policing and ensuring that no part of our state is left vulnerable,” he said.
The ALGON chairman also commended security operatives for their dedication and urged residents to collaborate with law enforcement agencies by providing credible information.
“Security is a collective responsibility. While government and security agencies play leading roles, the cooperation of the public is essential,” he said.
Abiodun further appreciated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for championing the actualisation of local government autonomy, noting that its benefits were beginning to manifest at the grassroots.
“We appreciate President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for championing the struggle for the actualisation of local government autonomy. Today, we are witnessing some of the fruits it is bringing forth in the development of our communities,” he said.
He disclosed that additional security equipment and vehicles had been procured and would be handed over to security agencies in the coming weeks.
In his closing remarks, Abiodun reaffirmed the commitment of local government leaders to promoting peace and development across the state.
“We will not relent in investing in initiatives that promote security, peace, and sustainable development. Together, we can build a safer, stronger, and more prosperous Osun State,” he said.
