Beyond Uniform: What to Know About NYSC’s New DG, Brigadier General Kunle Nafiu

Brigadier General Kunle Nafiu has stepped into the role of Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), marking a new chapter for the scheme. Appointed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, he replaces Brigadier General YD Ahmed as the 23rd leader of the corps. But beyond the title, what does Nafiu bring to the table?

A Military Strategist with a Global Perspective

Hailing from Ileogbo, Aiyedire Local Government Area of Osun State, Nafiu has built a solid career in military leadership. His academic background includes:

  • A Master’s degree in Strategic Studies from the US Army War College
  • A Master’s in International Affairs and Diplomacy from Ahmadu Bello University
  • A BSc in Geography from the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA)

His expertise extends beyond Nigeria, with experience in international peacekeeping missions across Liberia, Sudan, and South Sudan, including involvement in the South Sudan Independence Referendum in 2011.

A Leader Who Knows the NYSC from Within

Unlike many past NYSC heads, Nafiu isn’t new to the system. In 2008, he served as the Camp Commandant in Kaduna State, directly overseeing corps members’ welfare and operations. This hands-on experience could shape how he navigates the challenges of the scheme.

A Seasoned Military Administrator

Before his appointment, Nafiu was Chief of Staff to the Chief of Army Staff, first under the late Lt. General TA Lagbaja and later under Lt. General OO Oluyede. He has also commanded artillery regiments, including in counterinsurgency operations in the North-East.

His training spans top military institutions such as:

  • The Indian Army War College
  • The Army War College Nigeria
  • The US Army War College

He has also served as a Director of Staff (instructor) at the Army War College Nigeria, mentoring top-level military personnel.

What to Expect Under His Leadership

With his mix of military discipline, international exposure, and firsthand NYSC experience, Nafiu’s tenure could redefine key aspects of the scheme. Will he address corps members’ security concerns? Will he introduce reforms to make NYSC more impactful? Only time will tell.
