The Ijesa Alliance Forum (IAF) has condemned the Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Mr. Bola Oyebamiji, over what it described as an “unwarranted political display” during the coronation ceremony of the new Owa Obokun of Ijesaland, Oba Hastrup Adesuyi Ajumoko III.
In a statement released on Tuesday by its Media Director, Comrade Adelusuyi Daniel, the group said the conduct of Mr. Oyebamiji’s supporters at the royal event was disruptive and disrespectful, turning a sacred cultural gathering into a political spectacle.
“The Owa coronation is symbolic to the people of Ijesaland. It is entirely unacceptable that Mr. Bola Oyebamiji attempted to hijack such a historic moment for a political jamboree,” the statement read.
IAF emphasized that while it respects the political aspirations of individuals, the solemnity and dignity of Ijesa traditional institutions must never be compromised for political gains.
“What we witnessed from Mr. Oyebamiji and his supporters was not a celebration of the new Oba or a show of allegiance to our cultural heritage, but a misjudged attempt to politicize a royal rite. This was a desecration of the revered Owa stool.”
The group said it has no objection to Mr. Oyebamiji’s alleged governorship ambition, but insisted that traditional events must be spared the intrusion of politics. It described the incident as “an affront” on the collective pride of the Ijesa people.
“There is a time and place for political campaigns,” the statement continued. “The coronation of the Owa Adimula is neither. We call on Mr. Oyebamiji to issue a public apology to the Owa and the entire Ijesa people and ensure such an occurrence never repeats itself.”
The Ijesa Alliance Forum reiterated its commitment to defending the honour and sanctity of the Owa’s throne, warning politicians to exercise restraint and uphold the values that bind the people of Ijesaland.
“We cherish our rich heritage and will do everything within our power to protect it. The actions of Mr. Oyebamiji’s camp at the coronation were not only inappropriate but deeply offensive to what we hold dear as a people,” Adelusuyi added.
