Tension erupted at Polling Unit 19, Agulu 2, in Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State, where the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, was expected to cast his vote, following a disagreement over voter eligibility.
According to reports from the Harbinger correspondent monitoring the election under the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID), the voting process was briefly disrupted after some individuals insisted that certain voters should not be allowed to participate because they did not vote in the previous election.
The argument, which began as a minor exchange, quickly escalated into a heated confrontation as affected voters protested against the alleged disenfranchisement attempt.
The Presiding Officer (PO) at the unit explained that only one copy of the voter register was made available by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), making it impossible to display or verify additional copies as required.
Eyewitnesses said the situation caused visible tension among voters, with no security operatives initially present to control the crowd. Electoral officials were later seen making frantic efforts to calm the situation and restore order so that voting could continue.
As of the time of filing this report, the atmosphere at the polling unit remained uneasy, with observers calling for proper monitoring to ensure a peaceful and transparent process.
