Each farming season, policymakers return to the same ritual, announce fertiliser distribution, promise credit facilities and appeal to farmers to “go back to the land.” Yet despite these repeated interventions, hunger persists, food prices continue to soar, and millions of Nigerians remain food insecure.
According to the Global Food Security Index, Nigeria ranks near the bottom globally in food availability, quality and affordability.
But what if the problem is no longer just land or rain?
Across the world, agriculture is undergoing a quiet but profound transformation. Farming is no longer driven solely by soil, seeds and fertiliser. It is increasingly shaped by data, algorithms, artificial intelligence and decision systems that determine what to plant, when to plant it, how to protect it and where to sell it. In this new reality, agriculture has become a data war — and countries that fail to adapt risk losing control of their food systems.
The question Nigeria must confront is simple but uncomfortable: while the world farms with intelligence, are we still farming with hope?
From Fertiliser to Algorithms
Historically, agricultural productivity depended on physical inputs , fertiliser, improved seedlings, irrigation, tractors and storage. These remain important, but they are no longer sufficient. Today’s most productive farming systems are built on digital intelligence and real-time data.
In technologically advanced systems, farmers rely on predictive analytics to anticipate weather changes, pest outbreaks and soil nutrient depletion. Artificial intelligence models analyse decades of climate, crop, research and market data to guide decision-making. Precision farming tools determine optimal fertiliser quantities for each plot, reducing waste and environmental damage. Digital platforms help farmers plan harvests around market demand, cutting post-harvest losses.
This shift represents a fundamental change: farming is no longer just a physical activity; it is a knowledge-intensive, data-driven enterprise.
China’s recent launch of an open-source AI model designed specifically for agriculture is a clear signal of where global farming is headed. This model, trained on vast agricultural datasets covering horticulture, breeding, plant protection, livestock and agronomic research , is explicitly tailored to support decision-making across the food value chain.
While Nigeria has no equivalent publicly accessible agricultural AI system, the launch illustrates the future of farming intelligence. Developers note that domain-specific AI can provide more accurate, context-sensitive inputs to farmers than generic systems.
In contrast, Nigeria remains stuck in an input-driven mindset. Our agricultural conversations still centre on how many bags of fertiliser were distributed, how many tractors were procured, or how much land was cultivated.
Rarely do we ask harder questions: Do our farmers have access to reliable data? Are planting decisions informed by real-time climate intelligence? Are disease outbreaks predicted or merely reacted to? Are market signals guiding production, or are farmers left to guess each season?
Without digital intelligence, fertiliser becomes guesswork. Seeds become risk. Rain becomes destiny.
Agriculture as a Tech and Intelligence Race
Globally, agriculture is fast becoming a competitive technology race. Countries are no longer competing only on how much land they cultivate but on how intelligently they farm.
Agricultural data , on soil quality, crop performance, climate trends, disease patterns and market prices, is now one of the most valuable strategic resources in the food system. Whoever controls and uses this data effectively controls decision-making across the sector.
For Nigeria, this raises serious questions: Who owns our agricultural data? Do we even collect it systematically? Are farmers, researchers and policymakers working from shared, reliable datasets, or are decisions still based on outdated reports and political intuition?
The absence of a strong national agricultural data infrastructure has long been recognised as a barrier to progress. Only recently did Nigeria publish its National Agricultural Sample Survey (NASS) 2023 report , the first comprehensive dataset of its kind in years, providing insights into crop yields, livestock, land use, access to inputs and labour. This report and its public microdata represent an important step toward evidence-based policy, but harnessing data requires more than publication, it requires integration, analysis and widespread use in planning and forecasting.
In a world where food security is inseparable from digital sovereignty, Nigeria’s limited agricultural data ecosystem puts it at a disadvantage. Countries that fail to build their own intelligence systems risk losing autonomy over food production, pricing and long-term planning.
Beyond Land and Rain
Nigeria’s food security crisis is often blamed on climate change, drought, flooding and erratic rainfall patterns. These challenges are real and growing — especially in the northern regions, where water scarcity and temperature shifts are putting immense pressure on farmers. Recent reporting highlights how drying rivers and unpredictable seasons are undermining production systems and driving food insecurity deeper.
However, climate shocks alone do not explain why countries facing similar environmental pressures achieve better food outcomes. The missing link is intelligence and decision support systems.
Climate-resilient agriculture depends not just on reacting to disasters, but on anticipating them. Early-warning systems powered by data analytics can alert farmers to drought risks weeks in advance. AI-driven pest surveillance tools can identify disease outbreaks before they spread across regions. Decision-support apps can help farmers adjust planting schedules, choose appropriate crop varieties and optimise resource use.
Without these systems, Nigerian farmers are left exposed. Many still plant without access to real-time climate signals, leading to crop loss and wasted inputs. When disasters strike, responses are often slow and poorly coordinated.
This is not simply a failure of effort or resilience on the part of farmers. It is a failure of systems. Expecting millions of smallholder farmers to navigate climate uncertainty without access to data-driven support is unrealistic and unjust.
Stuck in Subsidy Politics
Despite these realities, Nigeria’s agricultural policy remains heavily politicised. Subsidies still dominate the conversation, not as strategic tools, but as political instruments. Fertiliser distribution programmes are announced with fanfare, often plagued by inefficiencies and poorly targeted delivery. Success is measured by quantities distributed, not by outcomes achieved. Reports show Nigerian households spend a disproportionately high share of their income on food , the highest globally, despite repeated subsidy interventions.
Subsidies without intelligence rarely deliver lasting results. Without data on soil conditions, fertiliser application can be wasteful or harmful. Without market intelligence, increased production can collapse prices or lead to post-harvest losses. Without tracking and evaluation systems, programmes become vulnerable to corruption and mismanagement.
What Nigeria needs is not the abandonment of support, but a rethinking of it. Support must shift from politically visible inputs to structurally transformative systems , data platforms, digital advisory services, integration of research with extension services, and farmer education.
This shift requires political will. Digital infrastructure is less visible than bags of fertiliser, but far more impactful in the long run.
A Fork in the Road
Nigeria stands at a critical crossroads.
One path leads to continued dependence on rainfall, subsidies and seasonal hope, a path marked by recurring food crises, rising import bills and growing poverty. According to recent analyses, malnutrition and extreme poverty in Nigeria remain deeply linked with food insecurity.
The other path leads toward a future where agriculture is guided by intelligence, resilience and strategic planning. This future requires embracing digital and data-driven agriculture, investing in national agricultural data infrastructure, supporting local AgriTech innovation, integrating research institutions with digital platforms, and ensuring farmers are not left behind in the digital transformation.
Ultimately, the question is not whether Nigeria can afford to embrace digital agriculture. It is whether we can afford not to.
In a world where farming has become a data war, falling behind is not just a technological failure , it is a threat to national stability, economic resilience and human dignity.
