Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has said that the issue of releasing the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, was not part of his discussion with the South East governors in Enugu, Enugu State, on Tuesday.
The former President disclosed this on Wednesday in a statement by his Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Akinyemi.
The statement read, “The regional development issues discussed include that of security and infrastructure. Others were economic and cooperative/collaboration, which was meant to complement the national economic development agenda.”
Obasanjo said though he and a former Secretary General of the Commonwealth, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, met with the governors to discuss regional development issues, the purported planned release of Kanu by the Federal Government was not part of what was discussed.
This development has elicited many reactions on Facebook.
Ugochukwu Vik Okwo commented, stating, “Gullible Igbo politicians are behind Kanu’s incarceration, they kidnapped him in Kenya with the order and help of BRITAIN, unfortunately, they thought Kanu would be killed but that is impossible and would never happen, Nigeria has 9 years 5 months left.”
In his comment, Isioma Jerry Ogass mentioned, “Obj is indirectly telling the Igbos, especially the youths, that Kanu’s freedom lies with Igbo elites who do not want him freed now nor in the future. Otherwise, the Igbo youths should not blame Mr. President.”
Moreover, E get Why reacted by saying, “Ok sir, we heard you loud and clear. But Sunday Igboho has been released since. We expect nothing from the spoilers of the jungle called Nigeria. The more you detain him the more the country is falling apart on a daily basis. Tell me one thing that is working in Nigeria? Gbajue regime will keep on sinking.”
While reacting, Abdu Salam Raufu noted, “That is Nigeria journalists for you, no proper investigation before the news. If they were talking to the Court, then it’s women’s rights abuse.”
Matts Udoh expressed his view, saying, “Whether you discussed it or not, My Former President, What is your opinion now, Should he be released or not???”
Ajibola Ayokunnu Ishola added, “Obasanjo has led the country to the best of his abilities. If you hate him, it’s your choice. Also, him meeting with the South East Governors has an agenda as contained.
It was based on regional development which was conducted before their summit. And that is nobody’s business unless it concerns them. At their summit, they can discuss whatever is of interest to them. How is this anyone’s headache? Rather, those currently in authority should check themselves whether any tribe in Nigeria will smile at their generation when the history books become opened based on their impacts.
Otherwise, let them do the needful. If Buhari that detained Kanu has a reasonable charge against him, the case would have been adjudged. But now, it has been politicised while the South East Governors kept looking. And I think it’s a good thing if they step into the matter now. Have your peace if you deserve it.”
Agada Gabriel Mary commented, “Baba is afraid of the power being, sound political oftentimes. So unfortunately when elders of our days are afraid of being harassed or tormented for standing on the truth, I weep for my generation.” Okoromah Collins added, “So, all were discussed except the only relevant thing to be discussed. That’s an error of high order. What did they waste the resources of the citizens for? Meaning they willfully encourage the problems in the South East.”
Adachukwu Asanwa concluded, “Confused nation we are dying of hunger in Nigeria you never talk, nah Mazi Nnamdi Kanu you want discussion, why is Igbo own different after they will call it one Nigeria please Nigeria government release that young man for peace to reign in Igbo land please.”
