The Accord Party candidate for Obokun/Oriade Federal Constituency, Pelumi Olajengbesi, has pledged to pursue policies that will make agriculture more attractive to young people, as farmers and women’s agricultural groups in the constituency endorsed his House of Representatives ambition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Olajengbesi said agriculture would form a major part of his legislative agenda, promising to champion interventions that improve farmers’ access to farm inputs, extension services, storage facilities and special grants for women and young people.
He spoke at a joint stakeholders’ meeting organised by the All Farmers Association of Nigeria, Oriade Chapter, and the Nigerian Women for Agricultural Progress and Development Initiative in Ijebu-Jesa, Osun State, where both organisations endorsed his candidacy.
“We must declare a state of emergency on poverty and partner with farmers for innovative ideas that will make agriculture more attractive for youths and more productive for society,” Olajengbesi said.
He described farmers as the backbone of the local economy and pledged to work with agricultural associations to address challenges affecting productivity across Obokun and Oriade local government areas.
“Our constituency is agrarian. We will listen to AFAN and our mothers in NWAPDI for better productivity. I thank you for endorsing me. I will not disappoint you,” he added.
The Governor of AFAN, Oriade Chapter, High Chief Ojo Sunday Fasosin, who is also the Saba of Egboroland, said the endorsement followed the candidate’s proposed plans for agricultural transformation, food security, access to credit for smallholder farmers and the empowerment of women in agribusiness.
Fasosin described Olajengbesi as a credible and people-focused candidate whose agenda, he said, aligned with the needs of farmers and rural communities.
He said members of the association had resolved to support the candidate because of his understanding of challenges facing farmers, including inadequate mechanisation, limited access to markets and the need to expand opportunities for women in agriculture.
The Obokun and Oriade chapters of NWAPDI, led by Mrs Olasupo Jumoke and Mrs Deborah Ojo, respectively, also expressed support for Olajengbesi, describing his candidacy as an opportunity to advance food security and agricultural development in the constituency.
A farmer and resident of Ijebu-Jesa, Fatinikun Micheal, described the candidate as a leader capable of addressing agricultural challenges through modern tools and improved policies. He also expressed readiness to work with the campaign council on initiatives aimed at improving agricultural output.
The endorsement adds the farmers’ and women’s agricultural groups to organisations declaring support for candidates ahead of the 2027 elections, with agriculture emerging as a key issue for rural communities in the constituency.
