The Osun Amotekun Corps has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening security in the state, with plans to introduce agro rangers and enhance collaboration with other security agencies.
Speaking during a media parley with the Osun Online Publishers Association (OOPA) on Thursday in Osogbo, the Corps Commander, CSP (rtd) Isaac Adekunle Omoyele, emphasized that Amotekun plays a crucial role in complementing the police, given the shortage of personnel in the force.
He noted that Amotekun is rooted in traditional policing methods designed to tackle multiple security threats in the Southwest and that the corps works in synergy with other security agencies in the state to ensure the safety of lives and property.
Addressing the ongoing clamour for state policing, Omoyele described it as a welcome idea, arguing that opposition to it stems from selfish interests rather than public benefit.
He stated that legislation would define the framework, ensuring state police operate within legal boundaries.
He also pointed out that Amotekun has the authority to prosecute criminal cases and that after investigations, case files are handed over to the Attorney General for further action.
Omoyele also revealed that Amotekun Osun is planning to acquire a bomb disposal unit while integrating African science into its security strategies.
He noted that intelligence reports suggest some Boko Haram terrorists rely on talismans for protection.
The corps is also introducing new innovations, including anti-cultism operations, anti-robbery measures, special protection units, and agro rangers to safeguard farmlands and rural communities.
He stressed the importance of personnel welfare, noting that plans are underway to implement health insurance for officers.
He added that there is nobody who cannot repent, even cultists, and that a reformed and repentant cultist can become a valuable asset to society. Training and retraining, he said, will remain a priority for Amotekun officers.
