Olowu Celebrates Former Military President Ibrahim Babangida at 84

The Olowu of Kuta, HRM Oba Dr. Hammed Oyelude Makama, CON, Tegbosun III, has extended warm felicitations to former Military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (rtd), on the occasion of his 84th birthday.

In a personally signed statement, the monarch praised Babangida for his modest achievements during his time in power, describing him as an “enigma” whose impact remains visible decades after leaving office.

“IBB has carved a niche for himself as a former military president. His tenure witnessed the completion of many monumental legacy projects that still stand today. His Hill Top Mansion in Minna has become a Mecca of sort for those aspiring to lead Nigeria,” Olowu said.

Oba Makama further noted that Babangida had been “grossly misunderstood,” adding that history would eventually be kind to him.

Citing the launch of Babangida’s autobiography, A Journey in Service, and the tributes paid by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Africa’s richest man Aliko Dangote, and business leaders including Tony Elumelu, Jim Ovia, Abdulsamad Rabiu, and Arthur Eze, the monarch said such testimonies proved the goodwill Babangida still commands despite leaving public office over 30 years ago.

“On behalf of myself, my Oloris, the Olowu-in-Council, and all members of the defunct IBB Vision 2003 and Vision 2007, I wish President Ibrahim Babangida a happy birthday and pray for his continued good health and grace,” he added.

Born on August 17, 1941, General Ibrahim Babangida ruled Nigeria from 1985 to 1993, a period that witnessed significant political and economic reforms.
