The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has called for the immediate release and fair treatment of journalist Tope Ibitola, popularly known as “Sugarito,” and student leader Boluwaji Ishola, following their arrest in connection with the Ekiti State All Progressives Congress (APC) primary election.
The Council urged security agencies to strictly observe due process, uphold the presumption of innocence, and ensure transparent investigation into the allegations, while appealing for calm among youths and political stakeholders in the state.
Reports indicate that security operatives arrested suspects in Ikun-Ekiti over alleged possession of arms and alleged plans to disrupt the APC primary election. The development has since triggered reactions from youth groups and civil society actors, who are calling for restraint and lawful handling of the matter.
Those affected include Tope Ibitola, a journalist from Usi Ekiti in Ido/Osi Local Government Area, and Boluwaji Ishola, the incumbent National President of the Federation of Moba Local Government Students’ Union.
Reacting, NYCN Director for Youth Advocacy and Policy, Ambassador Taiwo Ajayi, said the Council is concerned about the situation, stressing that no individual should be condemned before the conclusion of proper judicial processes.
“The National Youth Council of Nigeria is deeply concerned about the unfolding developments in Ekiti State. We strongly advocate calm, professionalism, and strict adherence to the rule of law in handling all persons currently in custody,” Ajayi said.
He added that youth participation in civic and political engagement must not be misinterpreted as criminal activity, urging security agencies to ensure fairness and transparency in their investigations.
Also speaking, NYCN National Public Relations Officer, Ambassador Benjamin Adekunle Onileowo, called for urgent review of the detention of the two youths.
“An injury to one is an injury to all. They are neither and can never be political thugs. We demand immediate review of their detention,” Onileowo stated.
The Council further urged security agencies to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation, while calling on political actors in Ekiti State to avoid inflammatory statements that could escalate tensions.
It also stressed the need to protect the rights and reputations of citizens, particularly journalists and student leaders, while allowing lawful processes to take their course.
NYCN reaffirmed its commitment to peace, youth inclusion, and democratic values, calling for a swift, fair, and transparent resolution of the matter.
