The best graduating student in Chemical Science at Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), Oloyede Oluwabunmi Jerome, with a 4.78 CGPA, vows to impact society through research and development initiatives. Honored at the 12th convocation on December 9, he marks 14 years since the department last had a first-class graduate.
In an interview with The Harbinger, Jerome expresses his aim to contribute to society through sustainable and innovative practices in manufacturing processes, ensuring environmental responsibility and product safety.
He emphasizes working closely with industry stakeholders to integrate sustainable practices, including adopting green chemistry principles and optimizing production processes.
“Through various combinations of research and development, working closely with industry stakeholders to integrate sustainable practices. This includes adopting green chemistry principles, optimizing production processes, and actively participating in projects that align with societal needs,” he said.
Jerome discovered his first-class honors potential in his 300-level second semester, maintaining a GPA consistently above 4.56 throughout his undergraduate years.
While not specifically aiming to be the best, he prioritized academic excellence, learning, pushing limits, and active engagement in his studies.
“The pursuit of knowledge, coupled with a relentless work ethic, drove me to excel,” he noted.
Specializing in Industrial Chemistry under Chemical Science, Oluwabunmi focused on its roles in pharmaceuticals, petrochemicals, and food processing.
He attributes his success to a passion for applying scientific principles in real-world scenarios, a pursuit of knowledge, relentless work ethic, and support from inspiring mentors.
Despite challenges, including a wrist injury before a semester exam, Oluwabunmi achieved a 5.0 GPA in the same semester, crediting it to Almighty God.
He emphasizes the importance of consistency, dedication, maintaining a healthy balance, and embracing a growth mindset for aspiring students.
Oluwabunmi adds that being named the best graduating student is an immense source of joy and pride, attributing his achievement journey to “God’s grace.”
