Nigeria is facing a deepening food security crisis despite its vast agricultural potential, growing population, and increasing policy attention to the sector. Across the country, rising food prices, declining farm productivity, and worsening climate conditions continue to push millions of households into vulnerability.
Recent data shows that nearly 35 million Nigerians are facing acute food insecurity, driven by a mix of conflict, economic hardship, and climate-related disruptions . This raises a critical question: why does a country with abundant arable land and a large agricultural workforce still struggle to feed itself?
A System Under Pressure
Nigeria’s food system is under strain from multiple directions. At the core is a structural imbalance between production and demand. While agriculture remains a major contributor to the economy, domestic output continues to fall short of national consumption needs.
The country increasingly depends on food imports to bridge this gap. According to data, Nigeria’s agricultural import bill has surged in recent years, reflecting a growing reliance on external markets to meet food demand . This dependency not only exposes the country to global price shocks but also discourages local production by making imported goods more competitive.
At the same time, farmers face rising production costs, including expensive fertilizers, seeds, and transportation. These challenges reduce profit margins and, in some cases, push farmers out of agriculture entirely. A 2026 outlook report indicates that limited agricultural engagement and weak income opportunities are already affecting food access across households .
Insecurity and Displacement
One of the most critical drivers of food insecurity in Nigeria is insecurity. Armed conflict, banditry, and farmer-herder clashes have made it increasingly difficult for farmers to access their land.
In the North-East and parts of the Middle Belt, violence has displaced millions and disrupted farming activities. According to the World Food Programme, over 2.3 million people have been displaced by conflict, severely affecting agricultural production and livelihoods .
The impact is direct: when farmers cannot farm, food supply declines. In some regions, entire farming seasons have been lost due to insecurity. Reports also indicate that attacks on rural communities have discouraged investment in agriculture, further weakening the food system.
Climate Change and Environmental Stress
Climate change is another major factor worsening Nigeria’s food security challenges. Agriculture in Nigeria is largely rain-fed, making it highly vulnerable to changing weather patterns.
Erratic rainfall, prolonged droughts, flooding, and land degradation are increasingly affecting crop yields. In many parts of the country, farmers can no longer predict planting seasons with certainty.
Experts note that unpredictable rainfall and rising temperatures are reducing soil fertility and agricultural productivity, making it harder for farmers to sustain output .
Additionally, environmental degradation, including desertification in the north and flooding in southern regions, continues to shrink arable land. These changes not only reduce food production but also increase rural poverty, as farming communities lose their primary source of income.
Economic Pressures and Poverty
Food insecurity in Nigeria is also closely tied to broader economic conditions. High inflation, unemployment, and declining purchasing power mean that even when food is available, many Nigerians cannot afford it.
Nigeria remains one of the countries with the lowest food affordability globally, with millions living below the poverty line . This creates a situation where access to food is determined not just by supply but by income levels.
Rising energy and transportation costs further compound the problem by increasing the cost of moving food from rural farms to urban markets. This contributes to higher food prices, especially in cities.
Low Productivity and Limited Technology Adoption
Despite its large agricultural workforce, Nigeria’s farming system is still largely dominated by smallholder farmers using traditional methods. Mechanisation remains low, and access to modern farming technologies is limited.
Although agritech innovations are emerging , including mobile platforms, precision farming, and digital marketplaces, their impact is still uneven. Many rural farmers lack access to these tools, as well as the infrastructure needed to adopt them.
Research shows that while agriculture contributes significantly to Nigeria’s GDP, low productivity remains a major barrier to achieving food security. Without improvements in yield, efficiency, and value chains, production will continue to lag behind population growth.
Post-Harvest Losses and Weak Value Chains
Another overlooked challenge is post-harvest loss. A significant portion of food produced in Nigeria never reaches the market due to poor storage, transportation, and processing systems.
Weak infrastructure, including bad roads and lack of cold storage — leads to spoilage, especially for perishable goods. This reduces the effective supply of food and contributes to higher prices.
Strengthening value chains through processing facilities, storage systems, and better logistics could significantly improve food availability without necessarily increasing production.
Policy Gaps and Implementation Challenges
While the Nigerian government has introduced several agricultural policies and interventions, implementation remains inconsistent. Initiatives such as subsidies, credit schemes, and import restrictions have had mixed results.
Experts argue that policy inconsistency, corruption, and poor coordination across levels of government continue to limit the impact of these programmes. In some cases, funds meant for farmers do not reach them, while infrastructure projects remain incomplete.
Moreover, there is often a disconnect between policy design and the realities faced by farmers on the ground. Without addressing these gaps, even well-intentioned policies struggle to deliver results.
Way Forward
Addressing Nigeria’s food security crisis requires a multi-dimensional approach.
Key priorities include; Investing in agricultural production rather than short-term interventions, Improving security in farming communities, Adopting climate-smart agriculture to build resilience, Expanding access to technology and financing for farmers, Strengthening value chains to reduce post-harvest losses.
There is also a need for stronger collaboration between government, private sector, and development partners to drive sustainable solutions.
