The Ondo State Police Command has taken two students of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, into custody over their alleged involvement in the drugging and sexual assault of a 20-year-old female undergraduate.
The command’s spokesperson, DSP Olushola Ayanlade, disclosed the development on Monday, noting that the case highlights the command’s ongoing efforts to clamp down on offences targeting young people within and outside campuses.
According to the police, the survivor had visited the home of her longtime acquaintance, 19-year-old Queen Sodo, whom she had reportedly known since their secondary school days. Investigators said the victim was offered a drink later confirmed to have been tampered with, causing her to lose consciousness shortly after consumption.
Police findings indicated that once the victim became incapacitated, Sodo allegedly stepped out to alert a male student suspected to be her accomplice. She was said to have stood guard while the male suspect carried out the assault.
A neighbour who heard disturbing sounds from the apartment reportedly forced the door open and met the victim unconscious beside the male suspect. The survivor was immediately rushed for treatment before being referred to a specialist medical centre where she is currently receiving care.
Ayanlade said both suspects have made confessional statements detailing their roles. He added that investigators recovered exhibits, including the drugged beverage, which have been identified by the victim and linked to the suspects.
The police spokesperson confirmed that the suspects remain in custody and will be transferred to the Gender Desk Office for further interrogation and prosecution in line with existing laws.
He urged parents and guardians to guide young people on personal safety and the risks associated with misplaced trust, stressing that perpetrators of sexual violence will be pursued regardless of their relationship with victims.
