Root Causes of Unwanted Teen Pregnancies: A Call for Action

By Abdulateef Faruq Olamilekan

In our contemporary 21st century, the influence of negative societal effects stemming from inadequate parental guidance is evident in the prevalence of unwanted pregnancies among young teenagers.

This issue primarily arises from parents neglecting their responsibility, failing to engage their children with supportive family members, and exposing them to detrimental influences within their community.

Moreover, some influential figures, including pastors, alfa, and priests, are inadvertently contributing to the problem by not being vigilant about the company young teenagers keep. The lack of discernment between attention and financial support by parents further exacerbates the vulnerability of teens to peer pressure and mass media, impacting their choices before entering higher learning institutions.

To tackle this issue, a crucial step involves fostering socialization that educates children about sexuality during puberty. This proactive approach aims to empower them to resist negative influences, such as cultism, prostitution, and robbery, prevalent among today’s youth.

Emphasizing the importance of sex education, it is proposed that a structured curriculum be integrated from primary school to higher learning institutions.

The mode of dressing is identified as a significant factor leading to unwanted pregnancies among female teenagers, often a consequence of poor upbringing and insufficient parental guidance.

This issue is compounded by the influence of schools and peer groups, resulting in indecent dressing that attracts unwanted attention, leading to instances of rape and involvement in rituals.

In conclusion, puberty becomes a critical stage for parents to actively monitor their children’s activities and sources of income. By addressing these issues comprehensively, society can work towards creating a positive environment that safeguards young teenagers from the pitfalls of unwanted pregnancies and associated negative consequences.
