On Thursday, a high court in the Federal Capital Territory issued a one-week ultimatum to the Department of State Security Service (DSS) to either charge or release Godwin Emefiele, the suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, who is currently under detention.
Justice Hamza Muazu made this request while delivering a decision in a significant human rights lawsuit filed against the DSS and others by Emefiele.
Justice Muazu acknowledged that the DSS has the authority to carry out its constitutional obligations of arrest, detention, and prevention of internal crimes.
However, he emphasized that these duties must be performed within the bounds of the law.
In response to this development, many people have expressed their opinions on social media. Isah Ibrahim stated, “Let him suffer enough, just like the way he frustrated us during the cashless policy.”
Adeyemi Ak Olanrewaju said, “What does the court have to do with our situation? Our God is still punishing him. And when God decides to punish a man, I am yet to see anyone on earth who can rescue him.”
Oluseyi Emmanuel Odunuga wrote, “Do we still have institutions that obey court orders? Wasn’t it the same court that ordered the release of MNK? Wasn’t it the same court that issued orders to INEC regarding the election? Do we still have a functioning judiciary? Nigeria is a lawless nation. The DSS will not comply with the court’s decision. Let us wait and see.”
Felix Ibeabuchi commented, “Let that high court use their brains! Where was the high court when Emefiele was ruthlessly dealing with Nigerians? Emefiele’s suffering has only just begun.”
Ateks TV stated, “The same court said we should continue using old notes, but Emefiele refused to comply. The court has no relevance in this matter for now. If power belongs to the strong, it is only temporary.”
Abasiama Okon wrote, “During the cashless policy, Emefiele disobeyed the high court. I don’t understand why the court wants to intervene now.”
Babalola Olawale suggested, “The DSS should charge him to court by next year December, and he should remain in their custody. I come in peace.”
