As Osun State prepares for its local government elections scheduled for Saturday, February 22, 2025, Hon. Adewumi Adeyemi Irekandu has called on eligible voters in Obokun and across the state to exercise their constitutional right to vote.
In a statement issued on Friday, Irekandu emphasized the critical role of local governance in the daily lives of citizens, stressing that services such as roads, healthcare, education, and markets are directly influenced by elected local leaders.
He noted that the only path to credible and competent leadership at the grassroots level is through democratic elections.
“This election is not just a political event; it is a constitutional requirement. The 1999 Constitution (as altered) guarantees a system of democratically elected Local Government Councils under Section 7(1), and State Independent Electoral Commissions (SIECs) are empowered by Section 197(1)(b) to conduct these elections,” Irekandu stated.
He further highlighted that the Osun State House of Assembly, as the legally recognized legislative authority, has enacted laws empowering the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC) to conduct and oversee the local government elections.
Addressing concerns over the legality of the elections, Irekandu clarified that no competent court had issued an order stopping the process.
He referenced past rulings by the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal, which upheld the validity of similar elections, stressing that only a legally binding court order could halt the electoral process.
“While concerns have been raised in certain quarters, it must be emphasized that no entity, institution, or advisory can override the constitutional process for democratic elections unless explicitly ordered by a court of competent jurisdiction,” he said.
Irekandu urged all eligible voters in Obokun and across Osun State to turn out en masse, cast their ballots peacefully, and contribute to strengthening democracy.
He called on security agencies, including the Nigeria Police, the Department of State Security Services (DSS), the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and other law enforcement bodies, to act professionally and ensure a safe, transparent, and credible electoral process.
“The Osun State House of Assembly, under the leadership of Rt. Hon. Adewale Egbedun, remains steadfast in its commitment to democracy, transparency, and the rule of law. OSSIEC must fulfill its duty to ensure that the election is conducted fairly and in full compliance with constitutional provisions,” he added.
He encouraged voters to go out early, vote peacefully, and remain vigilant in defending their votes through legal and democratic means.
“As public servants and stakeholders in Osun State’s democracy, we must all ensure that this election is conducted peacefully and in accordance with the law. Together, we will build a stronger, more democratic Obokun and Osun State,” Irekandu concluded.
With final preparations in place, all eyes are on OSSIEC as it moves forward with the electoral process.
