The Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC) Chairman, Hashim Abioye Esq., has dismissed allegations by a political party claiming the Commission is unprepared for the upcoming local government elections. Abioye assured the public and election stakeholders of OSSIEC’s readiness, detailing the Commission’s meticulous preparations.
In a statement released on January 11, 2025, Abioye emphasized that the Commission has adhered strictly to its timeline and schedule of activities for the elections. “The amended notice and adjusted timetable issued by the Commission is comprehensive and sufficient for any serious political party preparing for the elections,” he stated.
He outlined the Commission’s efforts, which include the appointment of Electoral Officers (EOs) and Assistant Electoral Officers (AEOs) across all local government areas. Special duties EOs and AEOs have also been engaged to enhance efficiency. In addition, OSSIEC has conducted retreats, seminars, and training sessions for Commission members, staff, and electoral officers.
One notable innovation is the ongoing paperless recruitment of ad-hoc staff, described by Abioye as a first in OSSIEC’s history. “This eliminates the cost, disorderliness, and security risks associated with physical recruitment processes,” he explained.
Abioye further highlighted the Commission’s IT-driven approach, which ensures that all relevant information is accessible through its website and portal. He also pointed to the ongoing OSSIEC Half Hour program on radio and television as part of the Commission’s public engagement and orientation efforts.
Addressing logistical preparations, the OSSIEC Chairman assured stakeholders of seamless execution, including security arrangements, which he refrained from disclosing in detail for strategic reasons. “We are ready, and nothing will stop us, Insha Allah,” he affirmed.
Abioye urged the public and political parties to monitor OSSIEC’s activities and verify the Commission’s claims through its online platforms. “As far as we are concerned, the process has been smooth with no hitches, and so it will remain till the end,” he concluded.
The upcoming local government elections in Osun State are expected to be a significant test of OSSIEC’s commitment to transparency and efficiency.
