In a controversial move, MTN Nigeria, the largest network provider in the country, barred numerous customers’ lines and caused a partial internet shutdown on July 29, leaving many users unable to communicate or conduct their daily transactions.
This disruption came just days before a planned nationwide protest on August 1, sparking widespread outrage among affected users.
Many MTN users expressed their frustration on social media platforms, using alternative means of connection to voice their displeasure with the network provider’s actions.
One user, Melvin Paul Miles, angrily stated, “MTN, we are coming for you on August 1st for causing more hardship. You guys will see us. Ogun dey kill una, una MaMa.”
Another user, Nnorom Chukwuemeka Chigozirim Moses, accused MTN of colluding with the government to stifle the protest. “MTN is working with the Nigerian government to stop this protest. Imagine blocking customers’ numbers that had NIN linked to them. Their plan is to shift our attention so that we will queue at their offices and forget protests.”
Búkì Olágbà mà shared a personal inconvenience, “My 88-year-old mother has the misfortune of having an MTN line. I got it for her and linked it to my NIN. Now, you have barred her line. I have to lose a day of work because MTN cannot link a phone number to NIN anymore. Thank you for your service. She will be using another network going forward.”
Eze Michael Chika warned of potential repercussions, “The protest may likely start in your various offices. Keep blocking people’s lines.”
Levi’s Brave Anyanwu commented, “MTN and NEPA, we will start the protest from them.”
Florence Oluchi Obi expressed frustration, “I received an OTP in my email but the second OTP that was supposed to come to my mobile is not coming. What do I do?”
Meanwhile, E. Chijioke Ogbonna suggested a need for better communication, “MTN, you need a Department of State-Society Relations headed by a seasoned political scientist who can interpret the times and seasons to you guys. Imagine blocking people’s lines and enforcing people to congregate in front of your offices in this time of national anger.”
Usman Abako criticized the service, “God punish them, they say my NIN is linked and they still barred my line. My God will judge you.”
Rita Nenye Uzoh highlighted ongoing issues, “Why does it keep showing me an invalid phone number? I made sure to register my SIM and link it up with my NIN two years ago. I am very livid right now as I am unable to do anything with my SIM. I cannot access any MTN center and the online platform keeps saying this. MTN Nigeria, please fix this!”
Ebi Zion pleaded for assistance, “Please MTN help me and unblock my line. I need to stay connected.”
