Following a recent report by Harbinger highlighting the sharp increase in off-campus house rents in Akungba, the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko Students Union (AAUASU) has announced steps to address the issue.
In a statement released via the union’s official WhatsApp channel on January 11, 2025, the AAUASU expressed concern over the financial burden the rising rents place on students.
“Last year, we observed a troubling trend of drastic rent hikes for students living off-campus. This led to numerous complaints from newly admitted students and returning ones. The situation has imposed significant financial strain on students already struggling to make ends meet,” the union stated.
To address the matter, the union convened a meeting with key stakeholders, including the Dean of Students’ Affairs (DSA), the Akungba Divisional Police Officer (DPO), landlords, caretakers, and agents. The goal was to negotiate a fair resolution to the ongoing rent hikes.
However, the statement revealed that some students faced threats and harassment from landlords and caretakers following the meeting. “This is not only unfair but goes against the principles of education,” the union remarked.
In response, the union has partnered with the DSA, the Akungba Police Command, the Department of State Services (DSS), and the university management to address the issue comprehensively.
While acknowledging the challenges faced by landlords and agents, the union emphasized the importance of prioritizing students’ welfare. “It is imperative that they consider the wellbeing of the students who are their tenants,” the statement read.
AAUASU called on landlords and agents to cooperate and work towards a fair and balanced resolution. “We hope they will take our concerns seriously and collaborate with us to find solutions that are equitable for all parties involved.”
The union reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that students are not overburdened by unfair housing costs, promising to continue its advocacy until a sustainable solution is achieved.
